Cootie Catchers

Artist Statement

"Cootie Catchers" have their roots in brightly lit elementary school halls and recess yards. Originally commissioned by Denver Night Lights, this stop-motion cyanotype video opened the door to an entire series.

Rather than telling the future, this series offers prompts for genuine connection. Each cootie catcher features its own set of topics designed to spark conversation. Whether you play with strangers or close friends, the result is always the same. It provides an avenue for deeper connection without the lingering anxiety of wondering if you went too far.

Finding Steve

"Finding Steve" was commissioned by Denver Digerati and Denver Night Lights for projection on the Daniels & Fisher Clock Tower in Denver, Colorado, in honor of Women's History Month. The film is a 60-second stop-motion piece created entirely with hand-printed cyanotypes.

Artist Statement

Have a career, make plenty of money, find a husband, maintain hobbies, buy things, have children, and you will be happy. Or so we are told. There comes a point where the chase ends and the goal is reached, yet we look at our accomplishments only to find they never brought us joy. We often get stuck in loops of dissatisfaction while chasing other people’s dreams, pretending our needs are all the same.

"Finding Steve" seeks to confront the stigma of disregarding one specific societal norm: dating. It begs the question of whether dating is truly worth the hassle. Choosing to opt out is often viewed as cynical or "giving up" rather than a simple recognition of ineffectiveness. To the outside world, "Finding Steve" represents what we are told is unhappiness or even something pathetic. However, as we strive for genuine satisfaction, we may find that listening to our own needs is far more important than allowing the rest of the world to dictate them.

Velma in Color

Shot on a yard sale video camera with 16mm film in 2021, during the Covid 19 Pandemic, this film was a passion project of a group of Denver artists; Kyle Hunninghake, Libby Garon, Karl Orion. The film was the perfect excuse to explore the empty areas of Denver and the concept of giving away the beauty in your life in order to grow those things.

Velma in Color follows the story of a young woman who begins her life in black and white and stumbles into the realization that through giving away her gifts, she gains color.
